[Houdini] Procedural Chopped Wood

Making Of / 09 September 2021

Been a while since the last blog post! Here's a quick setup for some procedural chopped wood pieces. I'll share the whole thing when I clean it up a bit more.

We have a few things going on here:

  1. Randomize arc angle
  2. Randomize piece height
  3. Bevel middle and side corner edges(randomized)
  4. Extrude bark area
  5. Assign mat IDs

That's pretty much the whole setup. Base randomization is driven by Frame number. Still need to tweak it a bit, as I'm getting some duplicated pieces.

Then on the right we have a simple simulation. We get our pieces in, copy them onto some points and sim. We can easily use the mesh_tiler from LABS tools and get a nice tiled mesh... for some cool textures in SD, let's say. :D

In the end we have our simulated pile:

I'll try to share this when it's all cleaned up and good to go.
Cheers!
